What We Do?

Sherdrell earned her B.A. and M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology from  South Carolina State University. She is licensed by South Carolina Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and also holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Sherdrell has extensive experience working in schools, Skilled Nursing Facilities, Inpatient/Outpatient rehabilitation  and private practice. Her areas of interest include cognitive-communication and dysphagia (swallowing deficits) in adults and children. Sherdrell is certified in Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (VitalStim) for adults with swallowing disorders. She also works with children that have speech and language delays, including children with multiple disabilities. She finds it extremely rewarding to see communication skills blossom when clients begin to effectively communicate their needs, wants, and opinions.

First Step Therapy, LLC was founded by two speech/language pathologists who saw a need for speech and language services in the U.S. Virgin Islands community. Although, we are from different parts of the world, we hail from the same passion; to repair, build and enhance communication skills in our society. Our team at First Step Therapy comprises of licensed Speech/Language Pathologists who specializes in diagnoses and treatment of speech, language, cognitive, voice, fluency and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Sitting in a sign language class at the University of the Virgin Islands, evoked a unique interest in learning how humans communicate.  The class enticed Wynella Cherubin to further her studies at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL.   Wynella  obtained her a Bachelor of Arts  and Master of Arts  in Communicative Disorders. During her time in Florida, Wynella  worked in the public school system, group homes, home health, school for children with Autism. She also worked at Florida Hospital and Orlando Regional Medical Center where she obtained experience in the area of  acute care and rehabilitation. Wynella is licensed by the Florida Board for Speech/Language Pathology and she holds her national  Certificate of Clinical Competence  from the American Speech and Hearing Association . Wynella enjoys advocating and working with people who has communication disorders.
